For Independent 2022, Page presents a series of new paintings by Zoé Blue M. The latest works take two points of departure—the five element theory and five popular Japanese folktales—to arrive at lively narrative scenes framed by the artist’s personal life. Earth, water, fire, wood, and metal are driving forces in color and temperature within each canvas. While the action in every scene is derived from the plot’s moral quandaries—trickery, fertility, revenge, purity, and greed.

In five new paintings, Blue draws out a mix of twisting energies and chemical reactions set in dreamy palatial environments. Blue’s protagonists step through flames with the grace, confidence, and clarity reflected in her idiomatic choreography of brushstrokes. Blue’s view on these elemental vernaculars thread the warp of the tapestry of Los Angeles, stylishly maneuvering through the cultural threads of the city that shaped her.
